An AFL-CIO Building and Construction Trades Department study has prompted two U.S. Senators to call for an investigation of apprenticeship programs run by the employers' group Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).
The study uncovered failures in the standards and completion rates of the nonunion apprenticeship programs, with some recording four times as many cancellations or dropouts as graduations.
Senators Edward Kennedy (D-Mass) and Patty Murray (D-Wash) last week asked the federal General Accounting Office to investigate the ABC apprenticeship programs' performance.
